Campaign Idea #2

Slogan: GNOME is People

Sub-slogan - "I am GNOME"

This campaign focuses in on the people who use and also create GNOME. This campaign helps add a human element to the software people use everyday. Contributors, whether they write applications, translate, write documentation, or create artwork can help highlight their contributions to GNOME and proclaim, "I am GNOME!".

One objective of this campaign is to build a community of GNOME users and developers leading up to the GNOME 3.0 launch. The primary audience for this campaign is GNOME users, and the secondary audience is Linux users in general. Building this community around GNOME could be critical in gaining acceptance of the changes in GNOME 3.0 in the existing user base.

Image 2: Wide angle lens shot of all the developers at GUADEC. (Developers are GNOME).

Campaign Element - Video "I am GNOME" campaign

Whether it's a user, developer, or employee, anyone who uses or contributes to GNOME can participate with a short video of 20 to 45 seconds. This campaign helps build GNOME's overall brand, and offers a level of personalization to the campaign. Users will have the choice of stressing the word of their choice in "I am GNOME".

User: "I travel a lot, and don't want to carry more than this netbook, which came with GNOME, and it includes all software I need. I am GNOME."

Developer: "I helped code application X and make sure it works. I am GNOME!"

Translator: "I translated these GNOME applications from English to x language. GNOME helps me use my computer in my native language. I am GNOME!"

Blind user: "GNOME includes a screen reader in all of it's applications that helps me use my computer. I am GNOME."

Sysadmin: "My name is John and I'm a member of the GNOME Sysadmin team. I help make sure the GNOME webservers are running all day, every day. I am GNOME."

Examples go on with users who file bugs, developers who triage them, art team members, downstream contributors who include GNOME in their Linux distributions, etc.

Campaign Elements

  • GNOME Video section on the GNOME website (make the videos embeddable) and post 1-2 new videos per week over a 2-3 month period leading up to the launch of GNOME 3.0.
  • Blogs - users telling their stories how they are a part of GNOME
  • Facebook page linking to the videos
  • Web Banners
  • Conferences & Trade Shows (Ohio Linux Fest, SCALE, Linux World, Fosdem, etc) highlighting GNOME 3.0

  • Linux User Groups - encourage users and developers to give talks at LUGs, and encourage LUGs to send in video footage.

Challenges

This campaign could have significant challenges in acquiring user generated videos for the video campaign. Additionally, if a video website, such as Youtube, is used, some users may have concerns around the use of a proprietary format such as Flash. Lastly, video editing can be a time intensive process. It will need to be decided whether users and developers are encouraged to send in raw footage or finished footage to be included in the campaign.
