Here is an attempt to answer some concerns raised by new notifications mockups. Main points :
- keep action buttons on the bottom edged for expanded banners
- reduce the risk of banners getting in the way (while this proposal doesn't solve the problem)
- add a visual indicator for pending notifications

Notification banners
- Notification banners slides up from the bottom edge
- Focus Stays on what the user is doing
- Notification counter appears while the banner disappears

Notification Tray
- Notification tray is accessed by clicking the notification counter
- A nice animation shows the notifications sliding up from the bottom edge to populate the popover
