GNOME Infrastructure Usage Policies

This document describes the policies for using the GNOME machines and any service provided through them, including, but not limited to, read/write access to the Subversion repository, shell accounts, e-mail forwardings, mailing list subscriptions and blog accounts, which will hereafter be referred to as "services".

1) The services are a privilege, not a right or commercial service. We will do our best to provide the community with as many of them as possible, as high-quality as they can be. However, just as we can offer no guarantee, we also reserve the right to revoke these privileges at any time, without prior notice, due to abuse and in the best interest of keeping everything running smoothly.

2) Do not use your access to GNOME services for unlawful activities, such as software piracy, private financial gain or commercial purposes, including consultancy and any other work outside the scope of your duties inside the project, for sending or publishing material that reflects badly on the GNOME project (e.g. personal attacks, attacks on competing projects) or that misleadingly attempts to portray the official positions of GNOME. In short, refrain from using your accounts for anything which is not the reason they were given to you or for which you may have got specific permission.

3) Do not execute any long-running process, servers of any sort (this includes IRC bots) without explicit permission of the GNOME System Administrators. IRC clients, bouncers or any kind of forwarding that exposes the server's address as a user's hostname are also forbidden. Please, also avoid running processes that are abusive in CPU or memory.

4) Do not distribute large files to the general public with your shell account: the machines you have access to are not prepared to handle the load. Instead, if there are any files you cannot or do not want to regularly distribute on ftp.gnome.org by means of the 'install-module' tool, ask the GNOME System Administrators about it.

5) The GNOME System Administrators are allowed to check on, change, compress, move or remove user files if they appear to be inappropriate and/or pose any risk to the system they are on, although prior notice will be given when possible.
