Wayland Hackfest

TBD, late 2012

Primary contact: EmmanueleBassi

Relevant GNOME team

GTK+, GnomeShell

Description

Transition GNOME from X11 towards the new Display architecture, Wayland.

Agenda, goals

  • Improve Wayland support in GTK+
  • Ensure that the Shell works as a Wayland compositor

  • Reduce the X11 dependency in the GNOME core apps
  • Ensure feature parity between Wayland and X11 usage
  • Make sure that Wayland developers are aware of the GNOME requirements

Measuring your success

At the end of the hackfest we should be able to run GnomeShell, along with various core GNOME applications, inside a Wayland environment. Potentially, also have an X11/Wayland hybrid environment to transition the current platform towards a pure Wayland implementation.
