Home Media Sharing

Introduction

In cases where media and content is not shared in the cloud it is a somewhat common desire to share media and content between devices on a home network. This may be through a dedicated media server, or peer to peer sharing between devices. A device may be a content consumer, controller, or server.

Objectives

Primary

  • To not interfere with the primary objectives of online sharing
  • Display and consume (view, play, read) media content from home media servers
    • Show photos in Photo app automatically
  • Send media content to a known media renderer/player
    • Display photos, videos on a TV
    • Print photos
  • Store media content on a known media server device
    • Store/import photos from an attached camera to the server
    • Automatically store new music purchases/dowloads on the server
  • Cache / download media content from a known media server device
    • Store photos for offline use on a laptop

Secondary

  • Serve media content from the local device to devices on the home network

Non Goals

  • Serve media content to all consumers on any network
