GNOME Media Roadmap

What are your plans for GNOME 2.24 (next 4 months, before feature and UI freezes)?

In general, GNOME 2.22 plan is to get rid of some oldish parts and do better integration with PulseAudio, and recent GNOME API changes. There are some ideas here and there, but general lack of time and agreement.

  1. get as many pending patches in, remove as many dependencies as possible (work on going for gnome-vfs for example)
  2. RFC disable GNOME-CD/CDDBSlave/VUMeter by default, minimal maintainance of those components, Rhythmbox&SoundJuicer are doing a much better job

  3. bastien is interested to take over gnome-sound-recorder, some other projects could use basic recording interface (ex: tomboy, etc)
  4. we believe we should work on improving gstreamer-properties and gnome-audio-profiles-editor (a la banshee profiles?). That might require a complete rewrite.

(packagers will have to carefully put GNOME-CD/VU under different packages, to keep some happy users, they will remain in the package, but should not be in the official release, tbd)

What are your plans for GNOME 2.26 (next year)?

  1. The volume-control area need lots of love: gnome-volume-control will be superseded by a PulseAudio mixer, and/or a higher-level device control UI

Do you have plans for the future (after GNOME 2.26)?

  1. webcam support? (see bug #523813)

  2. common widgets/gst helpers? (= things that don't fit in gstreamer itself and could help, mainly recorder and device choosers?)
  3. move totem's bacon-video-widget into gnome-media (currently it's copied by some projects)
  4. a GNOME media converter?
  5. a2dp/upnp? integration (might be out of scope, but part of general multimedia GNOME goals anyway)
  6. live streaming recording in sound-recorder + podcaster?
  7. audio configuration tester (test surround installation, for example)
  8. better and usable encoding profiles

Do you have any goals from 2.22 that were not achieved? Why?

Only bug fixes during 2.20-2.22, the previous maintainers were too busy with PhD/work.

Is there something that is really missing in our infrastructure or platform that would help you?

Do you have plans to work on other modules not maintained by you? What are they?

Do you have any GNOME-wide goals suggestions for the next releases?
