Pre-requisites

We do request that applicants have submitted a reasonable number of patches to an existing maintainer, or bugzilla reports before they request direct commit access.

Translators should be sure to read TranslationProject/RequestingAnAccount as well, in addition to the instructions below.

Requesting

/!\ Attention: In general, only request an account after someone said it is a good idea.

/!\ Attention: Do not request too many abilities. It will significantly slow down the accounts process, as every ability will have to be approved by someone. Only select the abilities that you are absolutely sure you will need right now. You can request further abilities later.

Please ensure the form contains:

See Information on how to generate a suitable SSH key pair. Please attach the id_rsa.pub file from your ~/.ssh directory to the form. You may register several keys for your account, but only enough to be considered reasonable personal use (e.g. one for work, one for home, one for laptop etc).

People who wish to obtain an account should fill in the form at: https://mango.gnome.org/new_account.php.

Translators: If and only if your language team is missing from the list box at the Mango page above, you will not be able to use the Mango page. In that case, use the alternative manual process listed below. However, the Mango way is preferred, so if your language team is listed, you should use the Mango method.

See also Requesting Accounts (the predecessor to this page, which is still relevant atm).

Alternative Manual Process

The above method for requesting accounts through the Mango system will work for the majority of cases, but unfortunately not all. Sometimes account requests will have to be dealt with in a manual fashion entirely. If a gnome.org sysadmin or accounts team member told you that you will have to request an account using the manual process, this is what you will have to do.

/!\ Attention: Do not use the manual process unless some sysadmin or accounts team member previously told you to use it! The Mango method above is strongly preferred. If you use the manual process for no good reason, you will risk having your account application rejected and be told to use the above Mango method instead.

  1. Send a mail to accounts@gnome.org that contains all of the following:

    • Your full name
    • Permanent email address
    • Requested account name. Please note - no nicknames - see AccountNamePolicy for details about account name requirements.

    • Explanation why you think you should get an account
    • Explanation why you could not use the Mango method above for requesting an account
  2. You will then at some point get a mail reply that includes a token; some funny words.
  3. Reply to that mail and make sure the token is included somewhere in the mail body of your reply. Attach (do not paste inline!) the public part of your passphrase protected SSH version 2 key pair (usually ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub). Note: We require RSA (2048 bits or more). Use ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 2048. Please make sure your key matches all the requirements listed at http://sysadmin.gnome.org/users/security.html. If your key does not match all requirements, it will not be possible to use it, and your accounts application will be significantly delayed.

Handling

Requests for changes to accounts should be sent to <accounts@gnome.org>. The <accounts@gnome.org> address now goes to the RequestTracker, and requests are handled by the AccountsTeam. Please allow at least 2 weeks for your request to be processed, although it might take as long as 4 depending on how busy the accounts team gets.

To see the current status of your ticket (not for new accounts!) please lookup your ticket number on the following page: http://www.gnome.org/rt3-stats/accounts.html

Problems

If you feel that your account application has been delayed and appears stalled for some unknown reason, be sure to read the MangoFAQ for some common reasons for this.

The future

We are tentatively considering disabling accounts we find that haven't been used for 2 years. We should probably write up a brief policy note here somewhere. -- RossGolder
