Google Summer of Code is a global program that offers students stipends to write code for open source projects. Participants work remotely from home, while getting guidance from an assigned mentor and collaborating within their project’s community. The application deadline for Google Summer of Code this year is April 6 and the program dates are May 21 to August 20. The stipend for the program is $5,000 (USD).

The organizations that will participate in Google Summer of Code this year will be announced on March 16, but the best way to prepare to apply is to become a contributor of the project that interests you early on. There are people in many organizations who are happy to help newcomers fix their first bug. Here is a list of some organizations where you can find mentors who will help you along the way:

GNOME is one of the organizations applying to participate in Google Summer of Code. GNOME is an innovative free software desktop. It is easy to use and is the most popular desktop distributed with free operating systems. Working on GNOME, you can be developing software for the core desktop, file management, messaging, popular applications, educational activities, or the platform libraries. You can find information for starting to contribute to GNOME, including a list of mentors for many GNOME projects, here:

To engage more women with the project, GNOME is also organizing Outreach Program for Women internships. The internships have the same structure, program dates, and stipend amount as Google Summer of Code, however they are open to any women who are available for a full-time internship (not just students), and are not limited to coding projects. Outreach Program for Women internships also include graphic design, documentation, and marketing projects. As with Google Summer of Code, the applicants need to get in touch with individual GNOME projects ahead of time to decide which project they are interested in working on and make a small contribution to the project.
