Notes:

  • With only a single user on the system the login screen is nearly identical to the lock screen, except:
    • It has a power button
    • It shows "logged in" instead of "locked"
  • The shield wallpaper used seems to be the one of the most recently logged in user

Tentative Design

System boots into a login screen.

After some inactivity, the screen blanks.

When system is woken up, a curtain is shown.

The user list is scrollable, but we don't show more than 5 users.

https://github.com/gnome-design-team/gnome-mockups/raw/master/system-lock-login-boot/login-password.png

For mouse input, the password entry is focused immediately. On touch an explicit entry focus is required for the virtual keyboard to come up.

Wrong password gets you back to the user selector.

Discussion

* What would this look like with hardware authentications? (smartcard, fingerprint reader, etc.) - -- BastienNocera 2010-05-25 13:12:11

* Will we have possibility to change keyboard layout? Currently default is EN and users are confused they cannot log in. - -- MichalPenka 2011-04-20 12:02:11

* In understand the need for a login that lets you select the user to log in as, but in many cases (like on laptops) you only have one user, and it would be more efficient to always auto-login into a locked session rather than pausing in the middle of boot just to let you type in name+password before starting the rest of the "computer" - -- AlexanderLarsson 2024-03-19 11:29:14

* I'm a little confused in the boot process.. what is the purpose of the big A button? Also the zoom into the desktop is a little disconcerting.. maybe too fast. Feels like a car wreck about to happen. - -- SriramRamkrishna

Comments

* FIXME - password hints
