These are a list of things that could be done to improve the GNOME LiveCDs.
Contents
General
Process
- There should always be Live-CDs available for every stable GNOME Release.
Crappy starts on these are in CVS: http://cvs.gnome.org/viewcvs/livecd-project/scripts/
continue updating content. The core of the content is now at the MarketingTeam/ExampleMediaFiles page under the 'Medium Priority' header to be edited and improved- go to it! Maintenance in the future will be done in CVS: http://cvs.gnome.org/viewcvs/livecd-project/root-dir/etc/skel/Desktop/
Future Total Potential CRACCCCK
- Install hula on the LiveCD and point evo at it, fill with fake emails, data, etc. Maybe with a fake, but working, email address
Install jabber server and point gaim at it, set up bot to auto-respond (say, eliza: http://darcs.vanrein.org/ALL/eliza/stable/ or attached eliza_bot.pl)
- Install asterisk or other SIP server and point gnome-meeting at it, set up answering machine, maybe email answering machine messages to the hula server
- Asterisk@home is an asterisk livecd, although it's based on centos.
- Install httpd, and set it up to serve from somewhere in the homedir, with bluefish or nvu saving by default to that directory.
GNOME LiveCD Base
- populate recent applications with various files
- populate calendar with gnome schedule .ical, or others if appropriate
continue to aggressively trim down package list; run deborphan regularly to find unused libraries
- set the background colors in GConf too, not just the image.
Localization
Ubuntu has done a lot of the heavy lifting here, creating meta-packages that make it a two package install for all language installation once the liveCD is built (details on [their wiki https://www.ubuntulinux.org/wiki/LiveCDCustomizationHowTo]. CVS is now structured to have a directory with the magic files; will still need to work with translators to make sure this works for them.
2.16 Release
- nothing yet?
2.14 Release
would be nice
- merge the 'about liveCD' doc somewhere into the website so it can be displayed and translated once but show up in multiple places.
- get someone to improve the information quotient of the 'about gnome' app.
2.12 Release
Known Bugs in CVS scripts/isos created by those scripts
- fix highlight icon thingies on xml, docbook opening in yelp
- ogg theora handler is muine- might be unfixable without removing muine
- need to make the script update /etc/apt/sources.list in a non-suck way
- add beagled, including adding 'xattr' to mount options for / in fstab and making sure it runs in gnome-session
- lots of apps have non-generic menu items (guh, this sucks)
High Priority Tasks
- if space, include Windows versions of gnumeric, gaim, evo. [Might want to make a 'lite' version of the CD, sans some stuff, to include this- would make it more useful for certain conferences.]
- Put the 2.12 release notes and GNOME Tour on the CD. The English versions will be ready one week before release. Tell us if you need more time.
- make sure the liveCD is promoted in the press release, /start/2.12/ page, etc., with a brief but useful description of what is on the liveCD- i.e., not just say 'we have a liveCD', but 'we have a liveCD that lets you download and burn one CD, and use that to see the latest GNOME stuff, including foo, bar, baz', etc.
- some media-specific stuff:
prepare a ../CoverLetter to distribute with the physical CDs, giving the two-second 'how to use a liveCD' walk through, explaining who to contact for media questions, etc.
Completed tasks:
- Automate generation of CDs in new languages, and have one CD per release-note language. Don't bother asking questions about keyboard, etc, for these. [Basically one command line now to do this.]
include enough very recent mono tools to make it a viable replacement for Monoppix; work with the monoppix team to make sure that the 2.12 CD can be trivially repurposed to their needs. [No server bits there yet, but everything else is in place.
Would Be Very Nice (or Needs More Detail)
continued improvement of the MarketingTeam/ExampleMediaFiles
- for potential publication in a DVD-sized case, investigate a version of the GNOME docs that could be printed in an 88 page booklet to put inside the cover of the DVD.
- include creative commons tools (Luis talking with Nathan Yergler about this)
Art
We want to make a big splash for the 2.12 release with the artwork for the CD. Needs we'll have, and want to have matching artwork for:
- gnome-session splash screen
- background
- CD label (i.e., to be printed onto the CD itself)
- CD cover (i.e., to be printed on the sleeve which the CD goes into)
- DVD cover (if we can get enough docs/written material together)
Things to consider for the art:
would be good if it were flexible, i.e., so that it would be easy to tweak to have versions for LWE, LCA, GUADEC, etc.- this could include both changing text and (ideally) changing art, so that we could use an Opera House for LCA, Golden Gate bridge for LWE SF, etc. Obviously that is hard
should use colors that look good with some set of common gnome themes/icons/etc. If the NewDefaultTheme work takes off, that should be taken into consideration as well.
Need to also make a list of Ubuntu branding to be removed/made more appropriate. Besides the things listed above, there is also:
- gdm
- 'about ubuntu'
